European Workshop for Film Criticism #3

What?

The European Network for Film Discourse (The END) and short film magazine Talking Shorts are organizing the third edition of The European Workshop for Film Criticism: two multi-day workshop sessions for aspiring film critics, this time set during the short film festivals in Leuven (November 2023) and Vilnius (January 2024).

Under the guidance of established critics and film scholars, the participants will gain insight into journalistic practices and learn the essential craft of film criticism through short films and curated short film programmes. The writing process will be supervised editorially during the festivals, and a selection of the texts will finally be published on Talking Shorts.

Framework

The European Workshop for Film Criticism is an intensive tandem workshop in the context of two short film festivals. Both workshop units will explore short film criticism and its possibilities. In Leuven, the “basics” of film criticism and the converging contexts of programming and festivals will be taught, while in Vilnius, the focus will be on essayistic criticism.

The lectures will be held in English.

28 November — 3 December, 2023
Workshop at Leuven International Short Film Festival (Belgium)

17 — 21 January, 2024

There will be tasks before each workshop and additional editing in between or after the workshop tandem.
Arrival and departure dates may vary depending on your place of residence.

The tutor of this tandem workshop will be Savina Petkova.
