Whispering Loudly II

The contemporary Lithuanian film and video art programme Whispering Loudly consists of three special screenings, each presenting the works by contemporary filmmakers and visual artists that go beyond conventional short films. The programme has been developed in collaboration between the Oberhausen International Film Festival, Germany, and Deimantas Narkevičius, one of the most internationally acclaimed Lithuanian contemporary artists.

“The development of the Lithuanian short film can be divided into two separate traditions. The first is the video and moving image artists, nurturing the tradition of experimental cinema, expanding the boundaries of genre. In this programme, the films of Anastasia Sosunova and Emilija Škarnulytė represent this space. Lately, we have been witnessing a breakthrough of the most recent generation of feature genre filmmakers. By remaining sensitive to the local social environment, they nurture the language of narrative cinema, characterised by much freer, bolder interpretations of the text and imaginative visual decisions to their predecessors. Small-format films by Vytautas Katkus, Saulius Baradinskas, Laurynas Bareiša reflect the posture of the just over thirties generation in a way that is appreciated and highly valued outside their own country. These three programmes, Whispering Loudly, are conceived as an attempt to combine into a common screening experience significantly different image-building traditions co-existing as two parallel artistic communities.” – programme curator Deimantas Narkevičius
