Vilnius Short Film Festival and Medūza“ present the solo show “Trickster’s Wake” by artist and filmmaker Susanna Wallin.
19th Vilnius Short Film Festival will also present the retrospective of Susanna Wallin’s films “Time Without Measure”. Wallin’s works are presented in Lithuania for the first time.
What trickery is needed to put together a story about a life lived? Wallin delves into the structuring of time and into the questions who gets the chance to create the narratives and what narratives are acceptable and for whom.
Wallin’s exhibition presents her latest works, which the artist created while living and working in Florida. Three films – “Idalia”, “Will’s Hill” and “Lizzy” – are like the artist’s meetings with three different beings: a hurricane in 2023, which swept across Florida, a British lord who served in the North American colonies from 1768 to 1772, and her neighbour Liz, who after her death left Wallin an electric organ and a box of 8mm film reels. The artist is creating a new film from the latter, part of which will be shown in the „Medūza“ video capsule. The gallery spaces will also feature objects that seem to extend the film “Lizzy” beyond the screen and create connections with the past and the setting for the trickster’s wake.
About the artist:
Susanna Wallin is a Swedish born artist and filmmaker based between London and Tampa, Florida. Her work spans moving image, sound, performance and text and engages questions about how time is perceived, lived and acted attentive to what emerges in hesitation, unpredictably and open ended while directing as well as letting occasions invent their own lure. Her award-winning films have appeared in venues such as MOCA LA, American Cinematheque, The Barbican, The BFI, Whitechapel Gallery and ICA, London.
