Fantastic genre films tend not to be based on facts, rather they are driven primarily by the imagination. ‘Other Realities’ is a programme showcasing the ability of filmmakers to construct credible worlds: we will visit dreams, Frankenstein’s castle, post-apocalyptic Spain, and a colony of bee-people.
“The broad definition of fantastic genre encompasses a wide range of sub-genres, a variety of formulas developed over decades to transport the viewer into an unknown and surprising reality. This is precisely the common denominator of fantastic films: their makers create worlds that must first of all be convincing; watching fantastic films we are supposed to forget that we are in a cinema and be transported to an undiscovered, but no less real, world. The truth or logic of a film does not have to be based on facts, rather the opposite: the driving force of fantastic genre is first and foremost the imagination. This programme is meant to do just that – to celebrate the imagination of the artists and their ability to create unfamiliar worlds. ‘Other Realities’ is a journey through the subgenres of fantastic genre, offering an unforgettable encounter with this film genre, which has yet to undergo a greater exposure for Lithuanian audiences,” – programme curator, filmmaker Jonas Trukanas.
