In Georgia, Ushguli mountain customs dictate that in the absence of a son, a family’s land must be handed down to the next male relative who will perpetuate the family name. The Men’s Land follows the journey of an aspiring singer as she fights for her property in the face of dated local rules and traditions, her song becoming a bulwark against humiliation.
About the director:
Born in 1986, in Ushguli, Georgia. Her first fictional short film (Dinola) in 2013. It has been invited to more than 300 film festivals and in 2014 was nominated at European Film Academy from Grimstad Fest. DEDE is her first feature film which had its world premiere at Karlovy Vary Film Festival and got Grand Jury Prize. After Karlovy Vary DEDE continued successful international screenings and got 18 Awards. In 2025 “The men’s land” Selected at VdR competition/ IDFA and got heart of Sarajevo. Mariam has been participated in the Berlinale Talent Campus, Sundance Screenwriters Lab, Cinefondation Residence de Cannes, Locarno Filmmakers Academy, EAVE and etc.
